The Houston Yates Lions survived a tough Huffman Falcons basketball team on Thursday night at North Shore Senior High School in the 2014 area round game of the Texas high school basketball playoffs. The 107-104 win advanced Yates for the ninth consecutive season to the regional round.
Four Houston players finished led by 6'5" power forward J.C. Washington's double-double finished in double figures. Washington had a team high 31 points and 11 rebounds. Complementing Washington was senior guard Jacob Young who knocked down six first half treys helping Yates a 63-45 halftime lead. Young ended the night with 23 points. Damion Lewis and Melvin Swift added 19 and 10 respectively in the win.
The Falcons (26-6) finished with four players in double figures.
Four seniors joined junior forward Chase Harrell (14 points, 8 rebounds) in double figures for Huffman. Zach Dumas had a game high 32 points along 5 assists, 3 steals and 6 rebounds. Fellow senior Garion Slayton had 25 points, 9 assists, 2 steals, and 4 rebounds. Darion Gray completed his career with a 17 point night to go with his 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal. Guard Kyle Richardson netted 10 points and pulled down 8 boards.
