This may be the toughest test of the 2013 Texas High School football season for the Huffman Falcons (2-0) when they meet the Galena Park Yellowjackets (1-1) at Galena Park ISD Stadium on Friday September 13, 2013.
For two weeks now, the Falcons have been tantalizing fans with their high flying offense and a defense that allows nearly as many points. Led by sophomore quarterback Cody Gaitan (667 yards, 10TD's, 70.59 completion rate), the spread offense is averaging 45.0 points per game. Senior Darion Gray who scorched the Yellowjackets defense with seven receptions and 123 yards has quickly become Gaitan's favorite target hauling in 18 passes for 333 yards. Gray is just one of three receivers who already have double digit receptions also leads the team with eight total touchdowns.
In their final contest against Worthing, the ground game began to come alive as sophomore running back Cesar Marroquin broke loose for 80 yards and a score to give the offense some balance and opposing defenses something else to think about.
The Falcons offense faces a defense that is big and quick. Led by senior linebacker Joel Moreno, the Yellowjackets have held opposing offenses just 17.2 points per game. Head coach Mike McEachern believes that his spread offense may have just what it takes to break down the Galena Park defense.
"They have not played a spread team like us yet this year, so we hope that will play in our favor. We do some things that are hard to simulate in practice when other teams are trying to prepare for us."
Defensively, the Falcons will have their hands full with Galena Park. The Yellowjackets led by quarterback Anthoula Kelly. Kelly tops the team on the ground with 320 yards and five touchdowns along with 142 yards through the air. The 5'11" signal caller is the key to their offense said McEachern.
"Kelly is a special athlete who can pass, run and extend plays. When a play breaks down, that is when he is at his best. He makes people miss and then at the last minute will put his head down, be physical and run over you for the last couple of yards.'
In five contests with Galena Park, the Falcons sport a 2-3 all-time record including a barn burning come from behind 35-34 win last season at Falcons Stadium..
