Two air traffic controllers have been suspended due to their behavior at the time two aircrafts, a helicopter and a plane, crashed over the Hudson River. Though the FAA doesn’t believe the actions of the two air traffic controllers caused the crash, their investigation uncovered behaviors that didn’t follow protocol.
The air traffic controller who was in charge that day, was engaged in inappropriate phone conversations, inappropriate as he was on the phone speaking with his girlfriend. Meanwhile, the on-duty supervisor wasn’t in the building at the time of the crash, as he was required to be. Nine people were killed during the plane crash. A new home video of the crash has been released as well. The video shows investigators new details regarding the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
The FAA is considering issuing changes in advisories for pilots flying over the Hudson River air space. Currently, pilots voluntarily use radio frequencies assigned to that specific air space, maintain speeds less than 140 knots and turn their lights on when taking off. The FAA might establish mandatory requirements.
