HU Column: Some Heroes don't wear capes

So, I am sitting on my bed in my hotel room in San Francisco looking into the air thinking about what I should write about for this week’s column. What kind of crazy stuff has happened in Hollywood for me to devote the space so that people would make people think and maybe get excited.

Then, I thought, I am in San Francisco sitting on my hotel bed at the Holiday Inn with hours to spare before I have to get up and get to work. Now, why on earth am I in San Francisco??? They don't have anything Hollywood going on in San Francisco, do they??? No, I don't think so except Nash Bridges was shot here as well as NBC's Trauma but that was cancelled and I am still pissed off about that, because to me it was a great show. Anyways, so why am I here and what does the title of this column really mean?

Some heroes don't wear capes? What does it mean? Well, I will tell you what that means and why I am in the bay area. The Guardian Angels are why I am here. I am in San Francisco sitting on my bed thinking before I have to put on my red beret and my white shirt that says Guardian Angels Safety Patrol on it and “we” as in members of the Los Angeles chapter who are in San Francisco to attend the 2010 international conference.

The Guardian Angels organization, who I have been a part of for around a year and a few months, are a voluntary not for profit organization with hundreds of civilians just like you that make sure the streets are safe and ensure you hopefully have a safe trip to whatever area we, that's right I can use “we” are patrolling.

So, to get back to business, I thought it was about time you got introduced to the Angels and I told you about it. It is funny, because a handful of people right after the movie “Kick Ass” hit theaters thought that was who we were and kind of got an introduction. The thing is, the closest thing that the Guardian Angels and the movie have in common is we do this to help people like in the beginning of the movie when the main character was alone and tried to help the guy that was getting beaten up. We do help those people on a nightly basis, but we never ever go out to patrol alone.

The point is just like the character Dave Lizewski aka Kick Ass played by Aaron Johnson, there are people out there who have had enough and want to make the community and their neighborhood just that much safer and instead of sitting on their bed in a hotel room in a city by the bay, they get off their ass. Instead of thinking about it, they do something about it.

I had the same thoughts when I was a reporter covering breaking news and crime. I complained about crime and how unsafe it was for people at times to walk the streets. Instead of sitting and thinking about it, the police can't be everywhere and people complain about it and instead of complain you should do something about it yourself and not just rely on the police, I did something. I meet members of the Los Angeles chapter of the Guardian Angels and that's when I told myself it’s time to be just like the nerdy character in Kick Ass and do something about it. That's how I became a Guardian Angel. If you want to make a real difference, why not become a hero without wearing a cape?

Oh yeah, on our patrol in San Francisco, we made sure that business and night club patrols had a good night. We don't carry any weapons of any kind. But as a member of the Guardian Angels you are extensively trained to handle what happens on the streets, so be smart, be safe and let me get pissed off at someone or something that is happening in Hollywood in my next column, because this time around, I am making a difference.

"Hollywood is a dangerous place, where the glitz and glamour of the day gives way to the evil that awaits. When nefarious individuals threaten the livelihood and safety of the populace, it's up to the brave to defend them. My name is Jeremy Meyer, and I....am a Guardian Angel!
