HTA championship major zone tournament begins July 5

Sixteen youngsters, eight from the Houston area, have been named the top seeds in their age divisions of the Houston Tennis Association Championship Major Zone tournament, which will be held July 5-6. Lee LeClear Tennis Center, 9506 S. Gessner, is headquarters

The USTA-sanctioned tournament, a major zone for championship players who are competing to achieve super championship status, has accepted 386 entries.

The No. 1 seeds in the boys championship division are: 18s—Ashton Duke of League City and Eric Wiik of Katy; 16s—Christopher Moolchan of Houston, Michael Loyd of Corpus Christi and Kyle Miller of College Station; 14s—Garrett Fillingame of Beach City, Arjun Bellamkonda of Cedar Park and Varun Somarouthu of Austin; and 12s—David Saland of Dallas and Qidao Lian of Katy.

Championship girls top seeds are: 18s—Alexis Brown of Wolfforth; 16s—Anusha Kartala of The Woodlands and Jessica Limjuco of Allen; 14s—Ryan Heidenescher of Cypress and Kate Martin of Katy; and 12s—Daniella Nassar of Bellaire.

There are multiple top seeds in the championship divisions because the draws are limited to 32 players.

In addition to Lee LeClear, matches will be held at Homer Ford and Memorial Park tennis centers, Clements High School and Lost Forest Racquet Club.

Cheryl Hultquist Horvath is the tournament director, and Harriett Hulbert is the tournament referee.
