Howard Stern took time at the beginning of his Thursday morning satellite radio broadcast to talk about Billy Joel’s divorce from his wife of five years, Katie Lee. Howard Stern and his wife Beth are personal friends with Billy Joel and Katie Lee. Billy Joel performed at Howard and Beth’s small, private wedding at Le Cirque in New York City last October. Katie Lee appeared on The Howard Stern Show last April to promote her cookbook “The Comfort Table.”
Howard Stern stated that he and Beth had visited with Billy and Katie at the Joels’ home two weeks ago, and admitted that he sensed problems.
Howard Stern pointed to the significant difference in age between Billy Joel and Katie Lee as one of the contributing factors to their split. The two married when Billy Joel was 55 years old and Katie Lee was only 23. He also cited Billy Joel’s intense touring schedule as a factor. Stern expressed doubt about rumors that the divorce was fueled by Katie Lee’s extramarital affairs.
“He genuinely loved her and she genuinely loved him,” said Howard Stern on Thursday morning’s broadcast. “I know they were both looking for something and they thought they found it.”
