Howard Stern thinks Jerry Lewis was fired from MDA Telethon

Howard Stern isn't buying the story that Jerry Lewis "retired" from this year's MDA Telethon.

Lewis, who has hosted a telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 1952 was absent from the broadcast for the first time in the show's history this year. Co-hosts including Jan Carl and Nigel Lythgoe made reference to Lewis "retiring" in what Stern interpreted as a poorly veiled cover-up of a seriously juicy behind the scenes scandal.

“I don’t believe he retired. I don’t believe that Jerry Lewis,, if he retired, wouldn’t in some way make a taped piece for the telethon.”

In May 2011, Lewis announced that this year would be his final year as MDA Telethon host, but in August MDA announced that Lewis was out as both host and chairman of the charity he started.

“Oh something happened," said Stern Tuesday. "They f***ing hate him. I mean, he’s the guy who created the telethon and they hate him. Jerry must be a flaming asshole if they didn’t give him his last telethon. It’s gotta be right?...You know how Jerry usually sings ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’? Guess who’s walking alone now? Jerry."

Stern even challenged members of the media to dig deeper into the case:

“Would some investigative reporter please write the book on that? This is a charity and they hate Jerry. He raised money for them his whole life and they didn’t even give him a goodbye show.”

The 2011 MDA Telethon raised $61.5 million for children with musculoskeletal diseases this Labor Day.
