Howard Stern shut out of Radio Hall of Fame nominations--again

It’s a good thing Howard Stern’s not insecure.

The Radio Hall of Fame has announced 2009 nominees for induction, and the King of All Media’s name is suspiciously absent—again.

Howard Stern spoke about his annual dissing by the Radio Hall of Fame on Monday’s broadcast of The Howard Stern Show.  “They (Radio Hall of Fame) are run by a company that runs terrestrial radio, so of course I’m not going to get a nomination” said Howard Stern, using his uncanny broadcasting ability to roll his eyes with the tone of his voice.  The National Radio Hall of Fame is run by the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago.  Members of the Board of Directors include employees of Cox Radio, Signature Media Group and Arbitron—all major players in the world of terrestrial radio.

Howard Stern also commented on previous inductees to the Radio Hall of Fame to prove his point.  Former host of “Solid Gold” Rick Dees made the cut, which prompted Howard Stern to ask the question “Has he really done more for the radio industry than I have?”

Rush Limbaugh was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1993. “Rush Limbaugh’s already in there?” wailed Howard Stern.  “Dan the Song Parody Man should be in there before Rush Limbaugh.”

The list of Radio Hall of Fame nominees for 2009 in the National categories include: Neal Boortz, Bob Brinkley and the NPR program “This American Life.”  Howard Stern conceded that one nomination was well deserved: the “National Pioneer” nomination for “Dr. Demento”.  “He had kind of a fun show,” offered Howard Stern graciously.

Howard Stern has been a tour de force in the American radio industry for more than thirty years, significantly longer than some of this year’s nominees and many of the Radio Hall of Fame’s current inductees.   It doesn’t sound like Howard Stern is holding his breath waiting for next year’s nominations.  “It’s B.S. anyway,” announced the King of All Media.  Howard Stern well know that is used to being shut out of honors reserved for more mainstream, less controversial broadcasters.

Bizarrely, Howard Stern Show staff member Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate and Jason Kaplan have been contacted to vote on this year’s nominees.  Too bad there’s no write-in category.

As Howard Stern continues to toy with the idea of retirement, the Radio Hall of Fame may be running out of time to honor one of the most progressive, original and entertaining radio broadcasters of our generation.  The good news is, it’s never too late for the schmucks at the Radio Hall of Fame to remove the remote controls from their collective butts and honor Howard Stern.  The “WLS Barn Dance,” a Chicago-based radio program started in 1924, is hoping to be inducted into the Hall this year—85 years after their first broadcast.

It's not "mysterious" at all. As Stern points out, he's not in the Radio Hall of Fame because he doesn't work in radio. I'm sure he doesn't expect to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame either.

Your analogy makes no sense: You don't have to currently work in radio to be in the HOF, just like no current baseball players are in the HOF. It's to honor a career. The fact that his career in regular radio is over does not diminish the impact of that career. Just ask the staff of "WLS Barn Dance." I'm sure they are no longer working in radio.

Nothing for all those years on terrestrial radio? No acknowledgment? What's happened to radio since he left? Doing well? Give the Dude some credit.

Really looking at the list of inductees, he should be in there. Yeah, I drink the Stern kool-aid as much as any of his fans, but for him to be snubbed after his contributions to radio does cast a shadow of ridiculousness upon the award. Due to his fame (or infamy) and his ability to draw listeners, he's a shoo-in. "Baba-booey" is entrenched in the pop lexicon. There's an entire sub-culture of Stern fans out there. Better than Rush Limbaugh fans since there's less santimonius bullshitters. I don't kow, maybe the industry feels a sense of abandonment from his move to Sirius.

Terrestrial radio is crap, you have a choice between stations that loop the same songs over and over, limbaugh's constant bs, and progressive hippies going on and on about hugging a tree. No one has ever had the balls to say the kind of things Howard brings out to light. His 9/11 show alone should put him in the Radio Hall of Fame.

If I was Stern, I would not want to ever be part of that so called radio hall of fame as his admission would only make their group credible. His exclusion from it says more about the legitimacy of that honor more than anything. What a joke.
