Howard Stern rips Mitt Romney over alleged animal abuse claims

Howard Stern says he only needs Mitt Romney to answer one question to find out whether he's fit to be the next President of the United States--and it's not about his magic underwear.

Stern told his radio audience that if he had access to Romney in a debate forum, the first question he would ask the presumed GOP Republican Presidential nominee would be about the decades old allegations of animal abuse regarding his dog.

In 1983, Romney reportedly piled his wife and five kids into the family station wagon for a journey from Boston to Ontario and strapped the family's Irish Setter into a carrier on the roof of the car for the entire trip. At one point in the trip, the dog's spontaneous diarrhea began pouring down the sides of the car. Romney's response was to hose the car down and keep going.

“Mitt Romney seems like a fairly levelheaded guy," said Stern Tuesday. "But there’s one story that I read about him…This sounds crazy to me. This is a real character flaw…I can’t even believe it’s true. They say that Mitt Romney had a [dog]. He had to take a long car ride. He tied the dog to the top of the car…I’m talking about—not like from his house to the drugstore…Like one of these crazy long trips—and the dog even s**t all over the [top] of the car because the dog was frightened...It shows me that this is a guy who has really whacked out judgment. It is so bizarre to take your family pet and strap him to the top of the car…It just shows me that there’s a lack of empathy for everything living.”

Other Stern Show staffers clarified that Romney claims the dog carrier was specially designed with a front "windshield" for the dog's comfort, but Stern wasn't biting.

“To me, Mitt Romney treated his dog like a mattress or a Christmas tree,” said Stern. "This bothers me. It just doesn’t seem like good judgment...It’s like the Beverly Hillbillies. And the Beverly Hillbillies treated the critters better! I just see it as weird.”

Romney won the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night and is expected to be the Republican nominee.
