Howard Stern: Paul McCartney inspired my New Year's Eve drunk dialing spree

Howard Stern returned to the air live Tuesday morning, kicking off the show by recounting how a Christmas call from Paul McCartney inspired him to call dozens of his own fans on New Year's Eve.

Stern told listeners he received a totally unexpected call from McCartney and his new wife Nancy Shevell over holiday break, wishing him and Beth a Merry Christmas. Stern was so blown away by the experience, he decided to pay it forward.

“After I hung up, I was really on a high. I said to my wife: ‘That was really amazing’…Who would ever think that Paul McCartney would call me…Fast forward, New Year’s Eve. My wife and I decided not to go out…We sit down and we have some time to ourselves,…and I said ‘You know, that call that I got from Paul McCartney was unbelievable. I said: ‘Who could I do that for, that I know that would make somebody’s day?’"

The Sterns then took to Twitter, announced that the King of All Media was "drunk dialing" and proceeded to call about 60 fans who posted their phone numbers online.

"We have the loveliest fans," said Stern Tuesday. "We truly do…We just sat on the couch. The cats were in our lap, and we were just dialing people and saying hello. It felt good, actually and our fans were great. Truly great.”

Sounds like Stern subscribes to that old credo of: "the love you take is equal to the love you make".
