Howard Stern says he recently turned down an offer to "take over" a major network television show.
Howard Stern made the statement Wednesday morning in response to a news story by Robin Quivers stating that Stern is being deliberately cryptic about his future plans for when his Sirius XM contract expires. Stern said that he truly has no idea what he's going to be doing in one year's time, but also stated that he's been open about "inquiries" he's been receiving from various media outlets including terrestrial radio and network television.
"Recently i was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year--and I did turn it down," said Howard Stern during Wednesday's 'News with Robin Quivers' segment. "Well, I didn't turn it down," added Stern. "I started to entertain it and think about it, and then I probably think my demands are pretty heavy and they were attempting to negotiatie and I said 'you don't have to'."
Howard Stern then added: "I'm not negotiating with anyone. I'm not even sure if I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens."
Howard Stern wouldn't reveal what major network TV show just missed out on being hosted by the King of All Media, but joked that the project was 'CSI Paramus'.
Various media outlets floated the idea of Howard Stern taking over for Simon Cowell on American Idol when the British truth-teller announced he was leaving the show after Season 9. The Howard Stern Show website has been featuring a poll asking listeners: "Which show should Howard Stern save by becoming it's host-The Tonight Show or American Idol?" The unofficial poll results show fans would prefer a Tonight Show hosted by Howard Stern by a 60-40 margin over a Howard Stern in a tight black t-shirt on American Idol.
Howard Stern's contract with Sirius XM expires in January 2011.
