Greg Kelly, the co-host of Good Day N.Y. and a personal friend of Howard Stern, was cleared of all criminal charges Tuesday after an investigation into accusations that he raped a woman in October 2011.
"Greg Kelly is a friend of mine," Stern told his satellite radio audience Wednesday. "Big fan of the show, and also I know him personally. He’s been to my home. Loveliest guy in the world, and a hero really. He was a pilot in the Air Force…The story smelled fishy from the beginning to me, and the sad part of this is—what does it do to his career?….It just sucks."
An unidentified woman filed rape charges against Kelly on January 24, 2012, claiming the TV host had sexually assaulted her in the law office where she worked after the two shared a night on the town. Because Kelly is the son of NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the investigation was conducted by the NY District Attorney's office.
Martha Bashford, Chief of the NYDA's Sex Crimes Unit, notified the accuser's lawyer Tuesday that no charges would be filed, stating the facts of the investigation "do not fit the definiton of sexual assault crimes under New York criminal law."
The investigation reportedly uncovered numerous amorous texts between the accuser and Greg Kelly exchanged the day after the alleged rape, among other evidence.
