Howard Jones interview: A peek inside the Devil You Know

After beginning his career as the frontman for Blood Has Been Shed in the late 90s, Howard Jones took on the vocalist job for metalcore titans, Killswitch Engage from 2002 to 2012. He left the bad amidst a series of health issues. Now he is set to return with his new band, Devil You Know, which the singer tells The Examiner and Metal Nation Radio, was the last thing he ever expected.

Jones talks about his belief that he was done with music. He had plans to get a regular job and put the industry behind him. Fate, however, had different ideas. First, Asking Alexandria reached out to him to cameo on a track from its 2013 release, “From Death to Destiny“, then Within Temptation called on him to duet with Sharon den Adel on its 2014 release, “Hydra“. In between these two appearances, All Shall Perish guitarist Francesco Artusato and drummer John Sankey (Devolved, Fear Factory, Divine Heresy) sent him some demos of their new project. Jones admits he was initially reluctant, but he was so impressed with the music he found himself pulled back into the thick of it all.

Howard admits that he was initially reticent to be back in the studio until the familiarity washed over him and he dove back in. The lyrics for the debut album, “The Beauty of Destruction” are among the deepest and darkest of the singer’s career, and for the most part, tell the story of his life over the last several years.

During our interview, Jones speaks frankly about his health, then and now; touring again; working on the Within Temptation album; which song on the debut record sums up where his head is at; and which three albums changed his life. Jones also talks about the band’s addition to the forthcoming Revolver Golden Gods Tour with Black Label Society, Down and Butcher Babies. Check out the interview above and place your pre-order for “The Beauty of Destruction” out April 29 via Nuclear Blast.
