How you can fit in exercise while watching the Olympics

The 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, have gotten off to a big start, and just watching the athletes, even in sports I am not all that interested in, is exhilarating. Those young men and women (and some not so young) are true believers in being healthy, and have committed to a lifestyle that no doubt will serve them well into their old age. No wimps among these folks, that’s for sure.

Given the many hours that the Olympics are being broadcast, there is a LOT of coverage. That means you are most likely sitting or lounging on your couch to watch them, along with some mindless snacking. Rather than deviate from your regular healthy eating (you ARE eating a healthy diet, aren’t you?), why not move along with the athletes, so you do not have to skip your daily workouts?

Just as I advised when watching “Dancing with the Stars,” you can have a fun workout by watching them and mimicking their moves.

FIGURE SKATING: No, you aren’t going to twirl around or move from facing front to backwards in swift foot changes. But you can move your arms and legs as you watch the skaters, as you can see in the photo. The skaters also do a lot of stretching, both up and down, and bending. Just follow along as best as you can.

SKIING: Bet you thought you cannot really follow along with the skiers, and you would be wrong! You can do knee bends, stand and twist from side to side, put your arms on the edge of a chest or on a wall and do push-ups to simulate the angles the skiers are leaning into. Stretch out your legs in front of you, too.

LUGE: Yes, those athletes are lying down on the sled, so you lie down on the floor and practice sitting up to improve your core. Can’t do that without assistance? Sounds like your core needs a little work! Rise up as far as you can safely.

With a little imagination, you can throw out your excuses that you do not have time to exercise, and get in a nice workout while watching the games. In between activities (i.e., during the commercials), you can do something such as lift free weights or cans, touch your toes, stretch overhead, etc. It really is a lot of fun moving around like a wild person to the TV set. Your half-hour workout will go by in a flash.
