Many of my friends follow directly in Jesus's footsteps when it comes to the treatment of gay people. They're supportive, accepting, but most importantly their treatment of me failed to differ from before they knew I was gay. These friends, although religious, do not what their homophobic church preaches, but what Jesus would actually do. They stand for fairness, equality, and kindness.
I remember one time when someone in our group of friends kept saying "that's so gay" and one of my friends called him out on it saying "Dude, stop 'saying that's so gay' when you mean something is stupid. It's not okay. Gay means someone who happens to be attracted to the same sex. Nothing more. Nothing bad. So quit it already."
That is exactly what Jesus would have done. Not only was my friend personally supportive and accepting, but he continuously speaks up on behalf of the minority. He speaks up for people who need an extra voice because there's nothing more powerful than a straight man who stands up for his gay friends.
Today, many churches and religious schools teach that homosexuality is a sin without realizing that God nor Jesus ever evan spoke of it. They said nothing, nada, zip. So why all the fuss?
I have heard a lot of Christians say, "I love gay people, but I don't have to like what they do. Don't expect me to go marching in any of those darn Pride parades." Just remember that Jesus makes no mistakes - and that gay people, like you were born straight, they were born gay. In the same way that an African American was born black or a left handed person was born left handed.
Learning to love is a task for a lifetime. We get to spend our whole lives learning to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and learning to love our neighbors as ourselves.
I am regularly reminded that when Jesus walked the Earth, He was continually doing stuff that made the religious people say that he was crazy and a blasphemer. He was continually hanging out with and loving the people whom the religious people condemned.
So what would Jesus do? Jesus would make those religious people angry by being proud of their gay friends, sticking up for them, and not letting their church or school spew untruthful hate about them.
So, reconsider marching with your gay friends in that parade. Consider putting one of those equal rights bumper stickers on your car. Consider wearing a gay rights shirt. Make those religious people angry. It's what Jesus would do.
