How to wear a hi-lo hem

With the rainy weather around Huntsville, you might be feeling like you’re trapped in your own personal Groundhog Day.  Gray gloom and fog does make things seem like the world is stuck on repeat and no matter what old Punxutawney Phil may or may not see today, it’s winter until March 20th.  So, you’ve got to plan for at least a few more weeks of warm and cozy combos to get you through the chilly days ahead.

Fortunately, even in the depths of winter, a girl can rock a skirt.  Thanks to modern advances, like fleece-lined tights (check out Crossroads Boutique on Whitesburg), and classic pairings like boots and chunky sweaters, you can wear your favorite skirts and dresses year round.

You may have noticed, in and around town at your favorite boutiques (Shoe Fly for one) a hemline that has trouble with commitment. Short in the front and low in the back, this mullet hemline, or hi-lo skirt is a trend to try now and as we roll into the new season.

You may ask as you look askance—askance, I say.  How am I supposed to wear this, it seems “too young, too out there, too different?”  Well, My Dears, first let me say that part of embracing fashion does mean taking an occasional risk.  This trend however, isn’t as out there as it seems.  With the right accoutrements, a hi-lo hem is quite versatile now and into spring.

Get the look.

Who can wear it?  Anyone really, because a hi-lo hem, gives you modesty where you want and need it most—in the back.  These skirts also tend to fall away from the body in an A-line shape more often than not, which makes them a very flattering option.  The featured looks start with a tulip skirt currently available at Target.

Whatever you style (even preppy) you can rock this hemline.  Wear it now with cozy layers (see more on that here.)  Add warm tights and your favorite boots.  Any boot works as long as the front hemline hits just at, or above the knee. Now, accessorize.

When it warms, a sleek tank, or tee and flats or strappy sandals will complete the look perfectly.

See the slideshow for more ways to style this look for warm or cold and to see how one skirt and some of the same accessories can work for many looks throughout the year.
