It's easy to set up your PC to call any phone in the US for free using Google's voice software-- first, sign on to www.google.com/chat/voice/. Note: These operating systems are supported: Windows XP+ or Mac OS X 10.4+ , or /Linux .
Click on large blue install button on right -- "Install"..
Click Run on the next screen.
Restart your browser -- not your PC, just your browser -- Internet Explorer, Safari, or other browser.
After the browser restarts, you will need to allow pop-ups and Google will install another bit of software.
You'll know you've successfully completed the install and are ready to go when a working dial-pad shows up on your screen.
Google will tell you if your PC does not have a microphone or a camera, but will still let you use its service -- your calls will be a nuisance to your friends if they can't hear you.
Attached is s slideshow with photos of the screens you'll see as you install Google voice; here's a link to an article about Google Voice's successful first day. And here's more about Google Voice which the author installed on 3 platforms.
