A behavior buck system can be a great tool to use when disciplining a special needs child. The behavior buck system shows the child how they can earn bucks, and how they can lose the bucks. It also shows the special needs child how they can redeem their behavior bucks for rewards.
Putting the behavior bucks system into place in your household is simple to do. You will need a few items to get you started.
Items needed to make behavior bucks system
- Paper of some sort. This could be regular paper, construction paper, or poster board. You will need three sheets.
- Jar to put behavior bucks in. It could be a jar, basket, or a container. Just something to keep the behavior bucks in order.
- Behavior bucks- You can find behavior bucks at Chart Jungle. You could also make your own behavior bucks. You can be as creative as you would like. Your special needs child can help you color the behavior bucks.
After you have your items together you will need to assemble your behavior buck system. Here is how to do that.
1. Take your three sheets of paper and label them accordingly.

Rewards
2. Start with the ways to earn behavior bucks. Make a list of all the good behaviors you want to reward your special needs child for completing. This could be picking up their toys, brushing their teeth, eating dinner without complaining, etc. You will have to decide on how many behavior bucks you want to award for each good behavior.
3. Next do the Ways to lose behavior bucks. Now you want to write down all of the negative behaviors you want to stop your special needs child from doing. These could include having a messy bedroom, back-talking, whining, lying, hitting, having a tantrum, etc. You will also have to decide how many behavior bucks you want to take away for each behavior.
4. Rewards. Now it's time to figure out what rewards your special needs child can redeem their behavior bucks for. Rewards can include watching TV, going outside, playing video games, going to the movies, etc. You will need to figure out how much each reward will cost.
Once you have made your charts place them in an area where your special needs child can easily see them. You can have them help decorate the container where they will keep their behavior bucks. Getting them excited will help them to want to try and earn behavior bucks.
One key piece of advice I want to offer is you have to be consistent with the behavior buck system. If they have lost all of their bucks, they cannot do the activity they want until they have earned enough bucks back.
