There some good news and bad news for Dreamwork's How To Train Your Dragon. The good news is that the latest film in the series, How To Train Your Dragon 2, has had a major success this past weekend. As of Labor Day, How To Train Your Dragon 2 has grossed up to $600 Million in the box office world wide. The bad news however deals with the next installment How To Train Your Dragon 3. The third installment to the animated franchise was going to hit theaters in the summer of 2016. However in a new report, Dreamworks have made a change to the next Dragon film.
From a report directly from Dreamworks Animation, How To Train Your Dragon 3 will now be heading to theaters on the June of 2017. Orginally, the movie was going to be released on June 17,2016; but it looks like it will be arriving a year late. This pushed back is likely due to How to Train Your Dragon 2 under performing in the box office. Another reason for the move could be that Dreamworks does not want to compete against Pixar's Finding Dory. There seemed to be many variables working against How To Train Your Dragon 3's original release date. Yet, while it may bother fans, perhaps this move would prove to be beneficial. For the time being, the third installment of How to Train Your Dragon has no major competition in its new release date. So while having How To Train Your Dragon 3 hitting theaters in 2017 may seem like a long time, perhaps this move will make the animated sequel worth the wait.
There is little information on the next film. What has been confirmed is that Dean DeBlois will return to write and direct the film; while Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera and Cate Blantchett will reprise their roles from the previous film. Aside from those details, we will have to wait and see what is in store for How To Train Your Dragon 3.
