Does it sometimes seem that a certain type of person always survives? When you watch the news interviews of survivors, have you ever wondered what they have that the ones who didn't make it have?
Disasters and danger don't discriminate. They can happen at anytime, to anyone. There's a few common elements shared by those who survive disasters and catastrophes. And of course some survive out of sheer random luck! But anyone can be a survivor by following a few simple steps.
Prepare. Preparation for disaster is key to any survival plan. Knowledge of your area and any emergencies that may present themselves, knowledge and the ability to use said knowledge regarding fire building or CPR, and enough food and water preps for your household (including pets) for a week will make a big difference if a disaster arises.
Keep a clear head. I'm not going to tell you to relax as the body goes into "fight or flight" response in these types of situations, but you can act rationally and remain calm.
Practice. Sure you may know what you need to do in various emergencies, but does the rest of your household? Practice the plans for every emergency, and make sure children know your phone numbers, emergency phone numbers, and have a per-arranged friend or family member to go to if your are not available.
With only these simple things you can survive almost anything!
