How to Store Perfume

July 8, 2010

How to store perfume is something every fragrance fashionista should be familiar with. Perfume can range in price from under $100 to over $1000; therefore, knowing how to store perfume properly is crucial. Whether you collect parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette or cologne, your perfume storage system will be the same.

Where you should store perfume:

The best place to store perfume is in a cool, dry, dark location. Ideal perfume storage locations include a closet, dresser drawer or cabinet away from the bathroom or location in the house which is prone to humidity and changes in temperature.

What to watch for:

Always make sure your fragrances have a tight cap or lid when you store perfume. Perfume can easily spoil if it is exposed to air. The air can change the chemical make-up of the fragrance causing it to spoil and change color. The best type of perfume bottles to purchase and store are ones with sprayers. Open tops and rollers do not protect your perfume from the elements.

Invest in the best:

Parfum will last longer than other types of perfume since it has the highest concentration of fragrance oils. Eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne have a lower concentration of fragrance oils than parfum.

If you really love a certain perfume and would like it to last a long time, then it is wise to invest in the parfum. If you think you will not wear a perfume very often but would still like to buy it, go for the less expensive cologne or eau de toilette version of the fragrance.

Warnings:

Never store your perfume in the refrigerator. The air is too cold and will spoil your perfume as well as cause the color to change. The color change indicates a permanent change in the chemical make-up of the fragrance.

Do not store perfume in the bathroom or medicine cabinet. The humidity from the shower and the sink will destroy your perfume. Always store perfume in a dry location away from rooms with humidity.

Never store perfume in direct sunlight. The ultraviolet rays will cause your perfume to spoil and change color. Perfume should be stored in a dark location.

Now that you know how to store perfume properly, you can freely purchase all of the parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne that your heart desires! Properly stored perfume should give you years, even decades, of enjoyment. Happy storage!
