Events kicked off today with specialty conferences like Storage Visions, being held across from the Las Vegas convention center in the Riviera Hotel and Casino. Leaders from entertainment and storage manufacturers discussed the increased need of faster and larger storage to satisfy today’s content producers. Most presenters will be represented at the 2013 International CES, opening Tuesday.
Before we can even get our hands around the relatively new 4K cameras, they are already talking about 8K cameras and screens.
Movies are now starting to utilize the HFR capture – well eclipsing the HDR capture frame rate. Shooting up to 120 frames per second – excellent, crisp high-definition shots can be shown in extremely slow motion.
Imagine – now you can enjoy that two second explosion for probably a good twenty seconds…and it will all be in super high definition.
But data capture and storage are always the issue to deal with. Jim Jonez, from Dot Hill, warned that if using HFR – be prepared for 7,600 MB/second. That’s 25 times the current 2K standard capture rate of 300MB/second.
Did you know – every day 10TB of data are produced for each Hollywood movie in production? It’s no wonder the theme of the show is the Petabyte is the new Terabyte.
One speaker mentioned that the bonding companies are now requiring movie studios to keep three copies of each clip shot, so multiply that 10TB of data three times more.
Maybe it’s time to buy stock in a hard drive manufacturer.
