The second half of the year has arrived for traditional MPS schools. Here are some ways to get children pumped and prepared to excel.
1. Pretend it’s the first day of school all over again. Go shopping for a new outfit, new school supplies and a special treat for young ones.
2. Highlight last semester’s successes and aim the bar a bit higher. Concentrating on successes keeps the message positive.
3. Review the new class schedule ahead of time. If there are any concerns about it, contact administration as quickly as possible to have it changed so the student does not fall behind in class.
4. Eliminate the drama. Have children work out differences between friends (or enemies) so they can concentrate solely on school.
5. Clean out locker and mind garbage. Like they say, attitude is half the battle. More than half, actually.
6. Modify homework rules, if needed. Making children sit at the kitchen table instead of in front of the TV or put away the cell phone while studying are two examples of possible rule changes.
7. Buy an assignment notebook, and use it! There’s never a better time to begin staying organized.
8. Meet the new teachers. Good communication between parents and teachers is essential to a student’s success, and meeting also helps ease apprehension for the child.
9. Keep files updated. If the family moved to a new house or if a child is taking new medications, it is time to update the files at school.
