How to start a successful small business doing what you love

Starting a new business can be a huge undertaking. There are many considerations to make to ensure that you are fully prepared for the commitment you must make in order for the business to be successful. Use the following guide to ensure you are amply prepared for the new business and that you will be able to find success doing something you love.

Step 1: Decide what type of business you wish to open. This deserves a substantial amount of consideration and market research. This is necessary to determine if the business you wish to open will be able to be supported by the local community. In most cases you can obtain this information from the SBA, which will have the most accurate and up to date figures. Narrow your business down to a certain category (specifically something you are interested in) and then from there find out what business you could create that would be sustainable and valuable.

Step 2: Obtain financing for the business. This can come from a number of various sources, which includes:
• Your own personal savings
• Investors such as your family, friends or partners you will have in the business
• Financing from the bank or the Small Business Association
• Loans or grants from the government (these are harder to obtain yet in some cases do not have to be repaid)

Once you have acquired your financing and determined the actual budget you have to work with, you can begin taking steps to open your new business.

Step 3: Create a name and logo for the business. Once you have thought of a name and designed a logo you can make your own shirt where it will be featured, or create business cards to hand out in the local community. Also, it is important to start considering mass marketing avenues to get the word out about the up and coming business.

Step 4: Create a launch date and promote, promote, promote. Once you have the business ready to open, you should kick it off with a large “to do” that will generate interest and attention from your local area. This can include free giveaways, door prizes and other incentives for customers to come and visit your store when you launch.

Step 5: Focus on customer interaction. Your customers will be the life-blood for your business and you need to really work on maintaining effective relationships with them.

Following these steps will help you decide on and create the perfect new business for your area. Knowing what the residents of your community want is essential on determining if your small business idea will be successful. Keep in mind, no matter what type of business you choose to open you will have some sort of competition. However, it is important not to completely focus on the competition, but instead focus on the goals for your business and how you plan to achieve them. There is no doubt that you can create a new business that is successful if you follow the steps here and are dedicated and committed to the business you wish to open.
