One of the most frequent complaints about the iPhone is how fast the popular smartphone sucks the energy right out of the battery. And this is compounded by having the battery sealed within the phone, so carrying around a replacement won't work. But there are many things you can do to save iPhone battery life simply by going into the iPhone settings and adjusting a few things.
One setting that will really save iPhone battery life
Fetch Email hourly or manually. The biggest drain on the iPhone battery is Push Notification, especially Email accounts that are set to push. Simply setting your Email to fetch from the server rather than have it pushed to the phone will do wonders for your battery life. For those who really need to save on battery life, try setting it to fetch hourly or simply fetch your Email manually.
Selective settings that will also help extend the iPhone battery
Push Apps. Push Notification is one of the nice features of the iPhone OS 3.0, and many new apps are beginning to utilize the feature. However, these can drain you battery as easily as mail drains the battery. If your iPhone has a problem lasting through your work day, try turning off Push Notifications while at work, or simply disabling Push on the apps you don't need while at work. Learn How.
Turn off Wi-Fi/3G. Most of us spend our work day either with Wi-Fi access or without it. If you have easy access to Wi-Fi during the day, simply turn off the 3G while at work. If you don't have access to Wi-Fi, turn it off when you get to work. Don't need the mobile access to the Internet while at work? Turn both off. Just getting into the habit of adjusting your data connection settings when you arrive at work and then turning them back on when you go home can save a lot of battery power. Learn How.
Turn off Bluetooth. If you don't have any Bluetooth devices, make sure it is turned off. You can also adjust this setting by turning it off when you don't need Bluetooth, but I wouldn't go so far as to constantly flip this setting on and off. Learn How.
Turn off GPS. The Location Services are another drag on the battery life, and it is another feature that we only use selectively. Turning off these services during the day is another easy way to save a little battery power. Learn How.
The easy way to save iPhone battery life
Adjust Brightness. Want an easy way to save a little battery power that won't impact any of the features that made you want an iPhone in the first place? Turn off Auto-Brightness and lower the Brightness setting for your iPhone. Simply cutting this back a few notches is a great way to save iPhone battery power without negating those iPhone cool features. Learn How.

A few more things that will help
Just plug it in. It sounds like a no-brainer, but if you are really having battery problems and the settings above don't clear them up, take opportunities to plug the phone in while at work. There are any number of gadgets that will pump power to your iPhone, from iPhone-compatible speakers to simply plugging it into your computer. So, if you know you are going to be at your desk for a while, try plugging it in.
Listen to tunes in the car. If you do a lot of driving, or simply go out to lunch on a regular basis, listening to tune on your drive is a great way to get some power into your iPhone. Even if you don't have a car stereo that accepts an iPhone, you can still listen to your iPhone over the stereo.
Juice it up with a new case. Let's face it, not all of us can plug it in for an hour or two while at work or taking a lunch break. If you are forced to go long stretches without the ability to charge your iPhone, and adjusting the settings still leaves you with a low battery too much of the time, you might think about buying a case with an external battery. The Mophie Juice Pack Air Case is a great product that can help out.

Hey,
My three day iphone is in Airplane mode and so far in the last 6 hours has lost 70% of its battery life... Seriously, i did not buy this to have a good looking accessory. Going to the apple to store to return it...
Great article--I will say, the iPhone 3Gs is powerful, but yes, very much a battery life sucker when it comes to keeping a charge. Definitely a downside of the iPhone. :(
"The biggest drain on the iPhone battery is Push Notification, especially Email accounts that are set to push"
You seem to have confused Push email and Push Notification. They are not the same.
The two biggest causes of poor battery life on FW 3.0 are
1) Restoring from a backup made with an earlier FW
2) Push Notification on hactivated phones.
There is no problem with push email but push notification on hactivated phones drains the battery.
The PUSH setting defies the whole point. If you're certain you don't need it, turn it off. It saves your battery much.
Thanks so much for this article. I didn't realize how much Push Notifications had to do with battery life.
