How to Safely Approach a Dog

Every dog has the potential for biting; it is a mistake to assume that only vicious and aggressive dogs are the ones we should approach with the upmost respect.  Even the most lovable and friendly of dogs could feel the need to defend themselves when put under specific circumstances.

Here are a couple of quick tips (wrapped in a mnemonic device for easy recall): D.O.G

Direct Question: Before approaching a strange dog always ask the owner if this is okay.  Even if a dog seems friendly and cuddly with the people he knows it might not mean that he enjoys contact with strangers.

Observe Behavior: Dogs are communicating with us all the time, they just do it in a slightly different manner.  Dog language escapes many people, including some dog owners! And that’s why we often hear people saying things like ‘the dog bit without warning’.  Let the dog be the one to approach you (sniffing is their way of getting acquainted). With your palm facing downwards, and your fingers gently curled and with the back of it facing towards the dog, move your hand a tiny bit forward. Let the dog move towards you to sniff, not the other way around.

Give Them Space: It doesn’t matter how much you love dogs or how much you believe dogs love you. It also doesn’t matter if you do this with your dog at home; when you meet a strange dog do not invade their space. Do not tower over them to pet them. Do not try to hug them, and do not try to kiss them. Keep away from a strange dog’s face and understand that staring a dog in the eyes can be very threatening to them.  If there is one rule you need to remember it’s to grant a new dog their space!
