There are times when we come home from the market with kiwi and they just aren’t ripe enough to eat. It seems to take days before they are ready to eat. There is a quick and easy way to ripen this fruit without having to wait and wait.
Kiwi is a fruit that originated in China. They are small, fuzzy or hairy exteriors. The kiwi is unusual from other fruits because when they are sliced the centers have a star shape look in the center of the fruit. The star shape gives a dessert, cake, pie or fruit salad a beautiful look.
To ripen a kiwi quickly all that you need to do is place them in a brown paper bag along with either an apple or banana. Then close the top of the bag and let it sit on the counter top overnight. Bananas and apples contain a gas called ethylene that actually promotes the ripening of a kiwi.
Now whenever you purchase a kiwi whether it is to prepare a special dessert or just to eat you won’t have to wait longer than one day before they are ripe enough to use.
Jackson residents can shop at any of these local grocery stores Reeves Grocery, Stringers Grocery, J & M Grocery, Pick’n Save or Wal-mart for all the ingredients needed for this recipe.
