Parents must take steps to protect their children’s health, and lay the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Some tips to help parents raise healthy children are as follows.

Serve Vegetables and Whole Grains. A healthy diet is necessary for a healthy body. Many children do not eat enough vegetables and whole grains. Parents need to include at least 3 vegetables in the evening meal. Brown rice and wild rice should also be served in place of white rice. If your children do not enjoy the taste of whole grain rice, try mixing it with white rice prior to cooking. Eat multigrain or whole wheat rolls with dinner. Be sure to include beans to increase healthy protein and fiber intake; serve meat as a side dish and keep it to a minimum.

Give Healthy Snacks. Children love to snack throughout the day; healthy children need healthy snacks. Raise your children to eat snacks that are good for their health. Provide a variety of fresh fruits and mixed nuts. If your children like to eat cookies and chips, replace those with healthy alternatives such as multigrain crackers, plain popcorn or pretzels. Promote Physical Activity and Exercise. Due to budget problems, many schools do not have daily physical education classes. However, children need daily exercise in order to stay healthy; they need to run around in fresh air and sunshine. Raise your children with the habit of exercising daily. Make sure your children get the exercise they need by taking a daily family walk or bicycle ride in the evenings. Consider enrolling your children in an after school activity such as gymnastics or baseball, or in a Saturday morning activity such as tennis. Even 15 minutes a day of exercise will help keep your children healthy.

Reduce Television, Video Games, and Computer Use. Raising children with healthy minds is as important as raising them with healthy bodies. There are too many violent images and messages being send to children by way of electronics. Help your children choose age-appropriate hobbies that help them to develop their natural talents and creativity. Get your children hooked on reading books that promote positive values. Help them develop and maintain a healthy outlook on life; constant exposure to violence will not accomplish that.

Pay attention to them and you will learn a lot from them, and about them. During family time turn off the radio, phones, and TV and enjoy being together as a family. Allow everyone to relax and unwind.
