Your first concern as a pet owner is to take the responsibility in its care and to protect it. One of the dangers we never want to face is our beloved pet getting hit by a car. Being fully prepared, you can avoid this awful occurrence. There are many things you can find at your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home that can restrain your pet and also make it more visible to motorists, avoiding the incident of an auto accident.
At least a million dogs each year are hit by cars and now that the weather is getting really pleasant out, more people are driving around enjoying it while pups are more frequently out on walks. Quite often, when a dog gets hit by a car, it is due to poor visibility; drivers cannot see your pet until it is too late. These cases can occur whether your dog is on a leash or not.
So, how can you protect your pet and ensure it's safety to the best of your ability? If your dog is a lover of the great outdoors, or not, provide a reflective collar and/or harness on your pet. When on walks, choose to also provide a reflective leash. You can also put a dog safety light on your pet for more visibility. The more visible your dog is to those around it, the better for its safety.
Other safety measures at home is to ensure your pet cannot escape its environment. Make sure all doors and gates are secure and locked. Double doors is a great idea so that, in the event you have to answer a door bell and open the door, a screen door or other protective closure is available to keep any pets restrained.
When you are traveling in a car and have to get out of the vehicle, be sure your dog is restrained so that it cannot just jump out of the vehicle into traffic. Close the door safely behind you. At the same time, be sure to not lower windows in the car so much that an animal can escape; only enough for air. A little precaution can go a long way to protect your dog from the dangers of being hit by a car or other vehicle.
