How to properly mow the lawn

A task that was once a major source of pride with home owners has slowly been fading. It seems many people either do not care how their yard looks anymore, or they do not understand how to mow the lawn.

Mowing your own yard has been a staple of American home owners for as long as homes have been owned. In Dallas, the climate is phenomenal almost the entire year. This means, your yard has the opportunity to look beautiful year round.

It’s understandable that some folks simply cannot mow their own yard for a variety of different reasons, but for those that can...it’s time to learn how.

To obtain a gorgeous yard that is the envy of the neighborhood, there are four simple steps that must be completed.

Start the project by weed whacking. Get the fence line, around trees, flower beds, mailboxes and any other object that grass grows vertically against.

Next, gas that mower and get to work. Mow in clean straight rows. When you begin a new row, overlap the tire track by a few inches. This will ensure all the grass is being cut. Continue in rows until complete.

Now it is time to put a nice clean edge on the yard. A mow is not complete without a clean edge. This can be accomplished with a weed whacker or edger.

The project is complete when you rid the yard, sidewalk and driveway of debris. This can be completed with a blower or a broom. Do not ruin the appearance of the yard by leaving the debris.

Tips:

You never want to cut off more than 1/3rd of a blade of grass on any cut. This means you need to mow at least once a week.

The grass needs to be watered at least 3 times per week. Do this in the early morning or late night after the sun has gone down

Fertilize your lawn at least once a quarter using the proper fertilizer each time. It is not always the same.

Be consistent. If your lawn is somewhat out of control, it will take some time for it to look as you might desire.

Take pride in your work. It is you that will create a wonderful looking lawn.
