How to overcome persecution at the workplace

See also

Have you ever heard the old saying "when you are at work, work as if you were working for the Lord." I heard it alot growing g up, from family members mostly, but also preachers and random spiritual mentors. I really thought I had a handle on that. Not that I performed at such a level all the time, but I had the general idea: be punctual, work hard, get along with others, etc.

When you accept Jesus as Lord of your life every aspect of your life also changes. Co-workers will notice this change. Some won't like the change, but they will notice. This change is a byproduct of your salvation. You now have a greater purpose in your workplace. I'm not talking about evangelizing, or proselytizing, but a character change. Your work habits change because you now have a greater Boss. You are now "working for the Lord".

What if you work in an environment that is not so.. let's say "Christian Friendly". That's not such a far reach in our somewhat volatile society. Suppose you endure passive aggressive attacks at your place of work. Anonymous notes, ostracized, dirty looks, jokes, snide comments, you get the gist. Maybe you are passed over for a raise, or receive less than favorable performance reports. Yes, these things make you mad, disheartened, and ultimately you will want to quit.

This is when Working for the Lord transcends to the next level. This where you truly understand who you work for. You maybe employed by Company XYZ, but you labor for God. You now have this protection that somewhat shields you from childish pranks and outright malevolence. Yes sometimes you get your feelings hurt, and sometimes you just want to throw in the towel, but then you are filled with this supernatural perseverance. Understanding why God has placed you in the position that you are in helps you to put one foot in front of the other day after day, despite persecution.

Most people view their employment as a means to support themselves and their families. From God's viewpoint this is your place to spread the Gospel of His Son. Rarely is this an easy task at your job, but it is still possible. God always finds a way for his work to be finished.

Here are a few verses to help you through your workday:

Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. - Colossians 3:22-24

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 5:16

And stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. - Luke 10:7

Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. - Romans 13:1-2
