We are all aware that in our society today, there are still problems with age-ism and discrimination related to age in the workforce. Age-ism also poses a problem for those people in a job search who are over a certain age. It is a good idea to be realistic about the challenges we may face professionally and in a job search, however focusing incessantly on this doesn’t help. Be aware of the obstacles that may come your way but don’t harp on them constantly.
You have a lot to think about in a job search, so if you cannot change your age, the next best thing is to focus on it as a positive thing. Learning how to leverage it and be a product of the experience you can bring to the table. You have to leverage your maturity and use it as a tool in your job search. It is easy to get frustrated if you feel like you are being treated differently. You have to stay present and focus on what you have to offer an employer.

What do you have to offer? - Create a list a list of your qualifications and experiences that you can bring to the table. Do not forget to include things that younger applicants might not have. Include your job qualifications and any life skills that you might have just from your years of experience.
Stay with the times - If you are not as tech savvy as you would like to be, try to brush up on your skills. Most jobs these days do require some knowledge of different forms of technology. That does not mean you cannot learn though, and you should make sure the employer knows you are willing to. You can always take some basic computer courses, or ask your friends or family to help you get more hands on experience.
Network! – One thing you might have to your advantage is a larger network from your years of experience. This is something you should not overlook. There might be networking opportunities that you do not even realize are there. Think outside the box and try to utilize your network whether it is family, friends, past co-workers, former employees, church members etc. You might have some solid professional connections right at your finger tips.
