How to organize your New Year's resolutions

See also

New Year's resolutions are specific; it is the same process as goal-setting. Instead of listing desired outcomes (such as lose weight, be generous. have a cleaner house, etc.), narrow the ideas to measurable, attainable goals. For instance, a measurable goal is lose 10 pounds; however, it is important to ensure the goal is easily attainable by having monthly goals of losing 2 pounds per month.

Idea for an optimistic year

An idea for viewing the previous year positively is to maintain a jar of happy moments throughout the year. On New Year's day, set a jar (i.e., mason jar, apothecary jar, or empty, clean food jar) and place a note pad beside it. Fill a paper contingent upon a happy event (i.e., a successful meeting, a promotion, a fun date, an entertaining phone call, etc.) and place it in the jar (colorful, folded paper is recommended for aesthetic purposes). On New Year's Eve, read all of the folded papers in the jar. This can become a memorable family tradition, and the memories can be used in scrap booking.

Organize your goals

Use a planner, index cards on a bulletin board, or desktop calendar, and outline weekly and monthly goals that will achieve a desirable outcome. For instance, if losing weight is the desirable outcome, identify an achievable goal (i.e., lose 15 pounds in the year). Outline how the goal may be attained (i.e., eating healthy foods, exercising, decreasing junk food intake, etc.). Monthly goals are then outlined, such as losing 1.5 pounds per month. Identify weekly goals that will help you attain the monthly goal (i.e., eat one healthy snack per day instead of a fatty one, so that you eat at least 7 healthy snacks per week). Also, ensure to reinforce the completion of smaller goals by providing yourself with a prize that is solely contingent upon the completion of the goal. If you find yourself unsuccessfully attaining a goal, re-evaluate the specificity of the goal to ensure it is achievable and that effective reinforcement is in place.
