How to motivate your child

Many parents spend thousands on tutors, sylvan learning and educational products. The problem arises when Johnny has no interest whatsoever in these products. In fact, he might even be labeled attention deficit disorder by his teacher or physician.

Have you ever wondered if he really had that disorder then how can he be so focused when playing his video games? Is it really about a focusing problem when he can play five hours straight on his X-box game? It actually sounds like more of a a selective attention disorder.

If a parent wants to get through to Johnny then they need to communicate in Johnny’s values. Why not explore how doing homework might get him to be a video game designer one day. Another possibility is to be a video game tester. You can go on to www.Indeed.com and explore careers in the video game industry with him.

Next, tie together how doing well in his math class will allow him to do his passion. When we talk in terms of what is important to Johnny then he is more likely to listen. The more you can communicate in Johnny’s value system then that selective attention can be geared towards his studies.

Unfortunately, many parents have not figured out how to motivate their child. It is fairly common occurrence to be labeled as a mental health disorder. In some health settings it is not even a psychiatrist but a psychiatric nurse writing prescriptions.

Next, he is now pushed into taking medications like Ritalin which can have some nasty side effects. A recent research study in 2006 showed that close to 10% of Ritalin users ended up with an addiction. The medication often gets increased since the body gets used to the current dose.

Many parents are just uninformed on the dangers of psychiatric medications. In Dr. Breggin’s book, “Toxic Psychiatry,” he shows the long term effects of these medications. This book is a fascinating read that shows the initial FDA studies on these drugs. They were never meant to be used long term.

Dr. Breggin is a psychiatrist who writes about all the dangers seen with psychiatric medication. If you follow him on Facebook you will see the latest research. In addition, there are about five more psychiatrists reporting on this same issue. They are all seeing the same kinds of problems.

It is unfortunate that so many of the youth in America are being drugged unnecessarily. In addition, many parents ignore their inner voice and listen to the Doctor with more initials behind his name.
