How to make Texas Style Chili

This authentic Texas style chili is easy to maKe and tastes like you're sitting in a Texas cowboy's ranch kitchen. Fairly low carbohydrate and low calorie, it can fit into most dieting styles. Serving with red beans is optional. 
 
A Cowboy’s South Texas Chili
  • 1 pound lean ground beef 
  • 1 pound hot Italian sausage
  • 1 (46 fluid ounce) can tomato juice 
  • 1 - 29 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/8 cup red wine 
  • 1 cup red onion, chopped 
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped 
  • 1/8 cup chili powder 
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin 
  • 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced 
  • 1 teaspoon salt 
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 
  • 1 teaspoon fresh oregano  
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar or Splenda 
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 
  • Optional: 2 cups cooked red beans
  1. Brown ground beef and sausage in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Drain and set aside.
  3. Add all ingredients to a large stock pot or Dutch oven.
  4. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. 
  5. Serve over red beans, if desired.
