- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 pound hot Italian sausage
- 1 (46 fluid ounce) can tomato juice
- 1 - 29 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/8 cup red wine
- 1 cup red onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
- 1/8 cup chili powder
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar or Splenda
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Optional: 2 cups cooked red beans
- Brown ground beef and sausage in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Drain and set aside.
- Add all ingredients to a large stock pot or Dutch oven.
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Serve over red beans, if desired.
Serves 8-10.
