How to make Cheese, Olive and Oregano Pinwheel

This recipe makes great for some appetizers or finger foods to offer to your guests. A pinwheel is more of a child’s toy that looks like a windmill, and due to the fact that in cooking the end effect is of a round shape that turns in itself; like a windmill.

The olives are a typical staple in the Mediterranean diet, as the olive tree also known as Olea europae, is found in the Mediterranean Basin which goes from Portugal to Israel and it is also found in the Arabian Peninsula which includes North East Africa and the east o China, and finally it is found as well in the Canary Islands, Mauritius and Réunion. The color of the olives depends on when they are picked, hence when they are black they are fully ripe, and the black olives in this recipe give it a good zing of flavor.

The following recipe makes for about 8 servings and it takes about 15 minutes to prepare and less than 20 to bake.

Ingredients and Items Needed:

1 sheet frozen puff pastry sheet

1 egg

1 jar of seedless black olives

2 tablespoons of oregano (preferably fresh but dry is fine too)

½ cup of flour

1 bag of shredded Italian cheeses

1 tablespoon of water

2 baking sheets

1 sharp knife

Food processor (optional for olives)

1 medium or small bowl

1 fork

Cooking brush

1 oven safe pan

Directions:

  1. First take out the pastry sheet and let it thaw for about half an hour
  2. Pre-heat oven at 400 Fahrenheit degrees
  3. Beat the egg for a minute with a fork and add a tablespoon of water
  4. If olives are not crushed, process them for a minute or two in the food processor until they make a paste
  5. Brush the egg mixture on the pastry sheet (but keep some aside)
  6. Spread the pastry with the olive paste
  7. Add the cheese and the oregano evenly on top of it
  8. At this point, start at the short end and roll the pastry sheet to form a log shape
  9. Cut the log with the knife into about half inch long slices
  10. Lay the slices on 2 baking sheets and brush the top with the egg mixture that you put aside
  11. Put in oven and bake for about 18 minutes
  12. Let the pinwheels cool for maybe 7 minutes before serving
