Every day brings more requests for donations at our local animal rescue shelters. It is a little painful for animal lovers who wish they could do more to help. As much as you want to, it is not always possible. Is there something you can do for the animals other than donate money?
Volunteering is an option, but volunteering is just not for everyone. Martha Powers discovered first hand that not all animal lovers and sympathizers can fill the shoes an animal rescue worker has to wear. However, that did not stop her determination to help as she looked around and saw the cats had no toys. A little bit of magic kicked in as her creative mind began to work.
Martha Powers left the shelter, envisioned a perfect cat toy, and became the Founder and President of Operation Happy Sock. In 2004, “Happy Socks” for cats went into production in Fairfax, VA. Simple enough for young children and fun enough for anyone older, groups of volunteers – Girl Scout Troops, church and home school groups, bored neighbor kids, Boy Scouts, and cat loving friends or single individuals - have produced thousands of Happy Socks and delivered them to cats in their local animal rescue shelters and foster homes.
Happy Socks are easy to make, so easy a four year old can make one. Happy Socks are catnip toys made from clean socks, old or new. Please view the slide show for easy directions.
Are you ready to start Operation Happy Sock in your area? You will find complete details on the Operation Happy Sock blog, or email Operation Happy Sock for your free info kit.
When the socks are done, have a group hug, or pat yourself on the back. Happy Socks and group members should deliver the Happy Socks to the rescue organization, because, as Martha says, “cats can say, “thank you’ better than anyone else!”
