With the political viciousness and violence around the country and around the world, it seems that many people are wondering what they can do to change the world for the better. There are many options: recycle, reduce waste, save energy, buy local, buy organic, support small local businesses, contribute to good causes, make your voice heard against injustice, vote for a better world, and so on and so forth. All of these are good things. There is something even more important though.
When was the last time you gave of yourself without expecting anything in return? The last time you checked on your elderly neighbor? Offered to help your neighbor rake leaves? Did an anonymous favor for someone? Actually brought a frozen meal to the mom with the new baby or a family mourning a loss, instead of just thinking about it? How many of your neighbors do you actually know?
Go out of your way, take the time, reach out to the people around you. If there is something you can do, do not make excuses, just do it. If we foster community support in our local neighborhoods, in our every day lives, it will grow and spread. When we live in a place where we can depend on the people around us and they can depend on us, we live in a community that can weather any storm.
As pagans we know that everything is interconnected, that our thoughts and wishes are things of power. Choose to use your power to benefit everyone. Kindness is that powerful.
