April showers bring May flowers, but humidity and inclement weather can easily become your nemesis when trying to keep a great hairstyle in order. Humidity is a killer for volume, curls and straight hair. You go from having a shiny, bouncy style to a flat and lifeless ball of frizz in literally minutes when the environment changes and the humidity is super charged.
But there are ways to work with the weather and essentially with your hair, instead of allowing it to work against you. Follow these key tips and you’ll find that you are able to keep your hairstyle in order without the woes of frizz, flattening and limpness, or five times the volume than you are actually seeking.
When heat styling hair with your blow dryer, use the cool setting to completely go over your hair. This will assure that the dryer is working with the humidity, not against it. It will increase volume as well as shine which will help to fight against the elements as you head out.
A great fan of humidity and a very easy way to get frazzled fast is to have excessive split ends. Make sure to keep hair treated and trimmed regularly. When you don’t have split ends, your hair won’t be prone to stand on edge and fly away so easily. You can use a smoothing balm after styling and it will keep the ends smooth and sealed. However, when you have a lot of split ends, it tends not to work as well. Bear this in mind.
Be careful with the way you dry your hair when you are showering and shampooing it. Towel drying and rubbing can immediately lead to frizz, even before you’ve gotten out the door! Squeeze your hair gently and allow it to air dry or blow it dry while it’s still wet and remember to follow the first tip to smooth and shine with your dryer. Also, adding a smoothing balm or glossing agent will keep hair smooth and frizz free.
Use anti frizz agents with your curling irons/blow dryers/flat irons. These will also help to fight the frizz and seal moisture into your hair shaft, which is essentially where the hair starts to go awry. Don’t overuse them though, or you will find that your hair becomes weighted down and limp, which is what we are trying to avoid. Usually a dime or quarter sized amount (for longer hair) will work perfectly.
Hair Cuts
Cut your hair in a way that will compliment the particular weather environment of the moment. Particularly in high humidity summer settings, you can find that you’re fighting with the weather so much that it becomes ajn all consuming task. One of the best cuts to work with the heat and natural humid elements is a layered cut. Your basic straight cut can leave hair limp and lifeless; where you will find that the layers add so much to the body so you will always have volume in your hair even when it seems unnatural to maintain.
How to maintain body and curl in bad weather
When trying to maintain curl and extreme body, pin curl your hair at the ends with some bobby pins before leaving your home. Again add a light glossy agent to the entire hair to seal in moisture and shine (focused on the ends), and let the pins loose when you arrive at your destination. Finger comb the ends slightly and VOILA! You will find that even through rain and extreme humidity your hair remains untouched, your curls are in order and you look fab. (The most important part!)
It’s very important to work with your hair, not against it and it will be much easier to overcome the natural aspects of weather that we always hate but must endure. You can look good even in the craziest of weather conditions with the right tools and the right know how.
