Having a garden is a joy in itself. Being able to share it with family and friends is special. Sharing it with wildlife adds another component to your enjoyment. It is a joy watching birds come into your garden for a snack at a birdfeeder. It is fun watching a bird take morning or afternoon baths at the birdbath.

By providing for wildlife you are helping Mother Nature. Most of the native areas in south Florida have been bulldozed for development. Wildlife has been vanishing from the area. Without their natural food sources,  wildlife leaves the area (or is killed by the bulldozer). Destroying the envrionment disrupts the food chain. This affects us in many ways. For instance, we need bees to pollinate our vegetables and fruit trees.

Reintroduce wildlife into the area by keeping the following in mind:

  • Plant native shrubs, trees, flowers and ground covers. This provides food and shelter to wildlife such as birds and insects.
  • Add a birdbath.
  • Provide some birdfeeders.
  • Do not use insecticides and herbicides on your property.
  • Do not over prune shrubs so that there are no flowers.
