How to look good on the golf course

See also

How you look on the golf course is almost as important as the overall quality of your game. After all, you want to look good even as your game makes you look bad.

Looking Good on the Golf Course

Chucking your driver across the green while sporting baggy shorts and a Quiet Riot reunion tour shirt is the fastest way to get you banned from a course. However, such actions done while looking presentable may be overlooked.

Yet that doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to brush off your Sunday best for a quick round at the local municipal. While men’s blazers are likely to turn heads in the country club, it’s sure to invite ridicule if worn out on the links.

Simply by following a few simple fashion tips, you’ll be sure to impress friends, clients, and the course staff with your attire, even if your handicap is much less impressive.

Understand Golf Style

The foundation upon which every man’s golf wardrobe should be built is a nice pair of khakis, which should be worn with the bottoms barely kissing the tops of your shoes. If wearing shorts, socks should go no higher than the ankle.

Don’t preoccupy yourself trying to match your belt to your shoes; mix things up by matching it to your shirt instead. And always remember these rules about shirts: first, there are no chicks around to impress, so keep the guns tucked away in sleeves that reach the elbow. Second, make sure that the shirt collar is tucked neatly in if wearing a sweater or vest.

Nothing is more of an eyesore than some dude looking like an explosion of plaid out on the course. Avoid patterns on patterns unless neither is dominating to the point of being distracting. Don’t be afraid to mix in a little color, but be careful. Remember: you’re golfing, not hunting.

Golf Fashion: Do’s and Don’ts

A round of golf is something you plan for, not something you simply decide to squeeze in while out running errands. So don’t show up to the course looking like you’re coming off of a late-night bender.

Wear a collared shirt that’s tucked in at the waist. Shorts are OK, especially during the summer, but use common sense. Leave the cargo shorts at home and go with a nice-looking pair of knee-length shorts instead. And with all the walking you be doing, your pants will be going for a ride on your waist. Always wear a belt to avoid constantly having to adjust your pants.

You want to have free range of motion in both your upper and lower body, but don’t wear clothes that are too baggy. Don’t go so form fitting so as to look as though you stole one of your wife’s women’s polo shirts, but avoid shirts with enough extra fabric to double as a hand towel.

Know Your Body Type

Players of all shapes and sizes are welcome in the Gentleman’s Game. Yet that doesn’t mean that all golfers should dress the same. Just as in most other facets of life, you don’t want your attire to call unnecessary attention to any of your unflattering features. Constructing your wardrobe with your body type in mind helps to avoid this.

If you’re on the bigger side, avoid drawing attention to your waistline with a belt that contrasts both your pants and your shirt. Choosing a belt with the same color as either item will provide a nice blended look. And don’t be afraid of stripes. While many advise against larger folks wearing them, a nice striped golf shirt with colors that aren’t too contrasting can look really sharp.
