How to listen to your iPhone through your car stereo

The Belkin FM transmitter is one of the best.
FM transmitters can be a cheap
way to get your tunes in the car

Want to listen to your iPhone in your car but don't want to buy an expensive car radio? No problem.

Many newer car stereos come with an aux plug that you can use for your iPhone. These are relatively inexpensive and an easy way to hook your iPhone into the stereo. You simply need an iPhone-compatible cable.

But what if you don't have an aux plug in your stereo? Don't worry, there's another way to get your tunes coming through the car speakers. It's called an FM transmitter and it works by sending the music from your iPhone to the radio through an FM signal.

If you live in a rural area, this works great because you don't have as much competition from FM station. There are even a few cheap FM transmitters on the market that might do the trick.

For those that live in the city, or frequently visit the city, you still aren't out of luck. While quality will vary from city to city, and FM transmitter can still work fine. We use a bit more expensive FM transmitter to listen to the iPhone in the car, but it works very good even driving right through downtown Dallas.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that an FM transmitter will work well for you since we are dealing with sending the sound via an FM signal. Not only will the quality of sound differ from city to city, but also from car to car.

Some tricks to get it working right is to put the FM transmitter in European mode, if supported. This will open up a few extra frequencies. Also, try moving the iPhone to a different position in the car. It might do a better job if it is a little further away from the radio rather than directly beside it.

The nice thing about FM transmitters is that many plug into the car lighter and charge your iPhone as you drive.
