How to leave bad habits behind

We all have habits even if we do not realize it. We do things that almost become a second nature to us. However, things that we do routinely, almost as a second nature. However, some of them can be detrimental to your career, lifestyle, relationships and your health. Many people live with their bad habits because they do not realize how negatively it is affecting them. In the new year try conquering these bad habits and leave them in the past.

Firstly, having a negative mindset is a bad trait to have. Being negative will not get you anywhere and will only put you a bad mood. Try to live in the moment and stop worrying about the past or the future. In order to not dwell in the past you must realize that you only have control of the present. A great way to start the day is to try to tell yourself something positive every morning so that it’s positivity will linger throughout the day.
Smoking is another addictive and toxic habit to have. Whether you are a teen smoker or a pack a day smoker quitting can almost seem impossible . However, smoking is responsible for many life-threatening diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and premature death. According the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), $92 billion are lost each year from lost productivity resulting from smoking-related deaths. Additionally, out of the 2.4 million deaths in the USA annually, over 440,000 are caused by smoking. Many adults turn to smoking because it helps reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, or depression. For many people when you are having a bad day a cigarette can help calm you down. There are much healthier ways to avoid unpleasant feelings throughout the day. It is much better to start exercising, meditating, and practicing simple breathing exercise.
Lying is also extremely harmful to you and those around you. Although, you may think that a white lie is not going to cause any trouble, it may turn into an addictive habit. If you are known as someone who commonly lies then people will stop trusting you. In the new year try to make a change and tell the truth even if a lie sounds better and it may be what your friends want to hear. At the end of the day lying will only hurt you in all aspects of your life.
Additionally, staying up too late is something that we all pick up in college. However, as hard as it might be it is one of the most difficult habits to end. Your body can only properly function if it has 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep can affect your memory, weight, and mood. Getting enough sleep will help you do better on tasks and the brain is able to commit to new information. It can affect your weight gain because not having enough sleep can affect the way our bodies processes and store carbohydrates and alter our levels of hormones that affect our appetite. A great way to avoid on staying up too late because of unfinished work or studying is to make sure you keep a schedule of your tasks so you do not fall behind.
Overall, trying to change habits is extremely difficult because we have become so accustomed to them. Many people will do really well and then lose motivation as well. Try to persevere when you are trying to overcome your bad habits that are holding you back. Always reward yourself even if you made a small change. It is still a change in the right direction and don't ever give up.
