How To Keep Your Diaper Pail From Smelling Bad

There is nothing worse than a stinky diaper pail. Try one of these 3 methods to keep your diaper pail smelling fresh! These methods work well for both disposable diaper pails (e.g. Diaper Genie, Diaper Champ, Diaper Dekor) and cloth diaper pails.

Method 1: Deodorizing Disks

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 box baking soda (16 oz)
  • 1/2 cup distilled/boiled water
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • Lavender and/or Chamomile Essential oil
  • 12-cup Muffin pan – Nonstick or Silicone
  • Muffin cup liners – Paper or Silicone (note: if you have a silicone muffin pan you don’t need to buy liners)

Instructions:

  1. Add 5 drops of Tea Tree essential oil and 5 drops of Lavender or Chamomile essential oil to ½ cup of water
  2. Add 2 cups of baking soda and stir until it forms a thick paste
  3. Fill each muffin cup with 2 tbsp of paste
  4. Place entire pan in freezer for 4 hours
  5. Remove disks from pan
  6. Toss disk in the bottom of the diaper pail OR if you pail has a slot for deodorizing disks in the lid, slide on of these disks in there to keep odors at bay.

Method 2: Scented Towel

What You’ll Need:

  • 6 baby wash cloths or 1 old towel cut into 6 inch x 6 inch squares
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • Lavender and/or Chamomile Essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Scent each wash cloth or cloth square with 10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil and 10 drops of Lavender or Chamomile Essential oil
  2. Toss one cloth in the bottom of your diaper pail.
  3. Wash the cloth in between diaper pail changes and replace with a fresh cloth.

Method 3: Scented Powder

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 box baking soda (16 oz)
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • Lavender and/or Chamomile Essential oil
  • Powder Shaker or old baby powder bottle

Instructions:

  1. Add 10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil and 10 drops of Lavender or Chamomile Essential oil to 1 box of baking soda.
  2. Pour powder in powder shaker and sprinkle this powder into your diaper pail every time you add a diaper to the diaper pail and/or change the pail liner.
