How to inspire educational responsibility

Dear LA Teacher,

When my oldest son started elementary school he was taught about the importance of an education. He knew that cutting classes was unacceptable behavior. Now he’s attending California State University at Northridge and he’s skipping classes to either sleep in or catch-up on other course work. He’s an adult now, so that’s his decision. However, my youngest son, now ten, sees what his big brother is doing and thinks it’s cool. What can I do to teach my little boy about educational responsibility?

Eager to Learn

Dear Eager to Learn,

I agree, your oldest son is adult so cutting classes are his decision. However, if his grades fall below a 3.0, inform him that the money spigot paying his tuition, books, supplies, food, and shelter gets turned off. Make sure this conversation takes place in earshot of your ten-year-old.

When my daughters were growing up, I frequently talked about the importance of education. I told them about my experiences when I was at their grade level and even pulled out old class photos. When they came home from school they did their homework at the kitchen table. I made it a habit to check their work. If errors were made, they had to correct their mistakes. Finally, I took my girls to museums like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art or The Museum of Tolerance.   We took nature hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains bike trips, and we traveled together to San Francisco, San Diego and various national parks. I listened to their dreams and encouraged their ambitions—all of which required an education. I suggest you do the same.
