How to identify personal fears in life so that you can overcome the fears

Some people in life have fears that are so great that their lives are negatively impacted by the fear. Hopefully this article will help you to identify your fears so that you can overcome them.

I will begin the article by identifying my personal fears:

*** Violence - I can easily look at a hand gun, but I have no desire to touch one, and I don't think that I could actually shoot one unless somebody's life was in danger. The males in my family hunted on various farms and killed squirrels, rabbits, and birds because that was a source of meat for us. I am accustomed to seeing rifles but have no desire to shoot one.

When I worked as a RN on behavior units, violent behavior was easily addressed. You simply called the switchboard operator and requested that a code be announced over the intercom. In some hospitals, this could be a series of numbers. In other hospitals, it could simply be a page that included the name of a fictitious doctor that actually didn't work at the hospital. All available personnel would then report to the designated area and take the proper precautions to keep both the unit and the patient safe.

*** Fear that one of my children or grandchildren will die. I attend Consolidated Baptist Church at 1625 Russell Cave Road in Lexington. There I have learned that God will sustain me through whatever trauma comes my way if I continue my daily walk through life and simply trust Him.

*** Fear of abandonment - I can identify two times that I was traumatized when a male figure in my household chose to leave. Some things are too personal to share over the internet, and I won't share the first experience. The second incident resulted in my desire to no longer date as I appeared to be incapable of making wise choices about who to date. I have a close friend that has the same outlook regarding men, and she taught me the phrase "my picker is broken."

I have learned at Consolidated Baptist that the Bible states that a man is to find his wife. The New King Version of the Bible states, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord". If God wants me to have a mate, he will place him in my path.

*** Fear of heights - I'm not really sure why I have this fear. When I was a child, I had numerous cousins. I, my brother, and those cousins had great fun sliding down what we called sand gullies, swinging from grapevines over those sand gullies, and also climbing trees.

The first time that I flew on an airplane, I truly thought that I might have a panic attack. Each time that I got onto another plane, my level of anxiety would decrease, and now I have absolutely no fear of flying.

I still have a fear of being in extremely high places. I'm not sure that I could stand on the Grand Canyon and look down. I feel that I could never go rock climbing and have difficulty watching these events on TV. There is absolutely no way that I would ever go sky diving. Someone would literally have to push me out of the plane. I would be dead before I parachuted to the earth, because I would have a heart attack on the way down. My thoughts about bungee jumping are the same.

The fears that I have overcome, I have overcome by choosing to read the Bible, pray, and ask God to sustain me through whatever comes my way in life. The earth is not my permanent home. It's just a temporary home until I reach my final destination. By then, I will have learned not to be afraid of heights.
