Some call this the home school bible
"How do I get started with homeschooling?" is a common question. Luckily, there are a lot of simple answers for it, too. Homeschooling in North Carolina is fairly easy. If you follow these easy steps, you'll be homeschooling in no time!
First, you will need to file a Notice of Intent with the state of North Carolina. You can print out the form you need from the North Carolina Department of Non-Public Education (or DNPE). Just follow the instructions provided, mail it in and within two weeks you will have your I.D. card sent to you in the mail.
Next would be to go and do some research on the laws for homeschooling in North Carolina. You can read all about the laws and print out brochures on different topics and fact sheets at the North Carolinian's for Home Education (or NCHE) website.
Once you have the basics of what is required of you as a home school parent down, the next logical step is to start researching curricula to use for your children. The state of North Carolina does not tell you what curriculum to use or what to teach but it can be helpful to look at what they are teaching and when if you are ever in doubt as to what you need to be presenting at home. You can see sample of Wake County's curriculum at their web-site. A great resource for explaining some of the best curricula available is Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum. This is an invaluable resource to have whether you are new to homeschooling of if you have been doing it for years. Ms. Duffy's guide not only describes some of the best curriculum out there, but also helps you to determine your child's learning style so that you can choose a curriculum that will work best for them and ensure a little less frustration!

Stacey,
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I've considered home schooling before but just NEVER knew where or how to start!
Very good article! I've considered homeschooling my 5yo autistic son. So far, the public school system has been good, but we will have to see what the coming years bring.
You can do it......we can help!!
I have to admit I have considered it. Too many scary stories about public schooling. Plus, I love having them home with me. Good food for thought
