Online Marketing is a relatively new and fast-growing industry that has no set requirements for entry, which is why it often draws applicants with different backgrounds and skill sets. There is no formula that you must follow, no exact college degree that you must obtain, and no one book you must read. It is a dynamic and ever-changing field that will require the same from a potential candidate. In order to score a job in Online Marketing, follow these steps:
Regardless of what you may have read, having a college degree will help. Especially if this is your first “real” job. Graduating from a four-year, or even a two-year college, shows commitment, follow-through, knowledge retention, and a zillion other skills that will be useful. For example, even though your degree was in Psychology, that can still be applied to Internet Marketing. Your knowledge of the human mind will help with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) when coming up with keywords, meta tags, and general content creation.
With that being said, not having a college degree won’t put you out of the running by any stretch of the imagination. However, you will need to demonstrate your ability to learn new information in some way, which brings us to step 2.
2. Learning on your own
Don’t think this step is just for those who didn’t go to college. Most of the skills in SEO, PPC, and other aspects of Online Marketing are not taught in your traditional university. This may change some day, but not yet. For now there are plenty of free, online options to learn about SEO, PPC, and all other aspects of Internet Marketing. Here are a few places to start:
- Think Traffic
- Social Triggers
These sites, and many others, have information in the form of blog posts, webinars, forums, and articles. Once you choose a website to learn with, become an active member in their community, you never know what connections you will make.
Now that you have some basic knowledge, it’s time to take it one step further. Before you can work for money, you have to work for free. One of the best ways to do this is start a blog. Showcase your ambitious work ethic, knowledge on a certain subject, and internet savvy all with a simple blog. WordPress is the most popular and widely used blogging platform, and is fairly intuitive. Once you have a blog, you can begin tracking it with Google Analytics, building a subscriber base, and promoting it on social media. Believe it or not, you are already doing online marketing.
