How to find and book a cheap hotel room in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is one of my favorite holiday destinations. It's also a great place to find a cheap hotel. Hotels in Malaysia offer comfortable accommodation, a whole slew of facilities and amenities and yet are often a fraction of the price of a similar American hotel. If you're taking a trip to Kuala Lumpur and like staying in cheap hotels, here are some tips on how to find a cheap hotel room -- but one that you'll actually love staying in.

Book a Room on the Net - I always do all my Kuala Lumpur hotel booking on the internet. Many hotels offer cheap internet-only rates and, if they don't, there are several internet hotel booking sites that do.

I always use Asia Rooms, Direct Rooms, or Booking.com.  All three sites offer competitive room rates, have a huge selection of Kuala Lumpur hotels that they book with, and usually have rates at least 10-20 % cheaper than the hotel's websites themselves.

Book a Room Near KL's Monorail System - Kuala Lumpur has an excellent monorail system that can take you all over the city, or link you to other train services that can. Surprisingly too, many hotels next to or near the monorail are cheap, yet perfectly located for getting around, as well as for easy access to superb eating and shopping venues. Book a room at a hotel near the Kuala Lumpur monorail, and you won't be disappointed.

Book at Hotels in Chinatown - Chinatown is a fun place to stay as it's not only home to some of KL's coolest shops and restaurants, it's also the place where the famous night market is.

Check out budget hotels like the Swiss Inn and Hotel Chinatown Inn. I've stayed at both and they both offer clean, comfy rooms, with satellite TV, Wi-Fi internet and friendly staff. When you factor in you pay $25 a night or less, you really can't beat them.

KL's 'Box Hotels' Have Cheap Rooms - The so-called 'box hotels' in KL offer just as you'd expect - a tiny room that's not much bigger than a box, but usually centrally located and very clean and comfortable.

I highly recommend Cube Hotel around the corner from the Bukit Bintang monorail station. The last time I stayed there, I paid only $27 a night for a room with a double bed, a tiny ensuite bathroom, flatscreen TV with satellite, and free unlimited Wi-Fi. The location alone was superb. Throw in a clean hotel room with some of the friendliest staff I've ever met in all my visits to KL, and it's no wonder I go back again and again.

Tune Hotels - I'm not a huge Tune Hotels fan as you have to pay for all the 'extras' like air conditioning, hair dryer, Wi-Fi internet etc., so they're not always as cheap as they say. But.....some people love them so they're worth checking out.

Following these tips, expect to pay no more than $25-35 a night for a nice hotel room, that's centrally-located, clean and safe, with nice staff and some amenities. It's no wonder, with hotels like this, that KL is rapidly becoming Asia's most visited city destination.
