Reflexology is the science art of applying specific finger and thumb pressure techniques to the body maps located on the feet, hands and ears. The theory is that these maps have reflex points that correspond to every body, gland and part. By stimulating these maps the Reflexologist is encouraging the body to use its natural healing ability to bring the body into balance. A wonderful side-effect to the process is that most forms of Reflexology are incredibly, can't-keep-your-eyes-open-a-second-longer, relaxing!
Where are the Reflexologists?
In Massachusetts the profession of Reflexology is growing, as is the interest in this modern modality with ancient roots. The Massachusetts Association of Reflexology is a good place to start your search for a local Reflexologist. This local membership organization keeps a directory of members that have met the national education standards for Reflexologists.
Another good avenue is the American Reflexology Certification Board, this organization tests Reflexologists in both a written exam and a hands-on practical exam. Members of this organization have received at least 110 hours of classroom training in Reflexology alone and have documented 90 Reflexology sessions. The online directory is searchable by State and organized by names of Reflexologists.
Choosing a Reflexology Practitioner
Once you have a list of several local Reflexologists you can contact them for more details. Your personal health goals and needs may determine who you choose for a practitioner. If you have specific health concerns you will want to know if your Reflexologist has experience or knowledge in this area. Some practitioners specialize in populations, such as palliative care in hospital settings, or working with women's health needs.
Beyond clinical experience there is also the consideration for technique and pressure. Some local Reflexologists are trained in Father Josef's Taiwanese method which uses a firm and quick pressure. Others may practice only a gentle or light touch style of Reflexology. You may wish to try several practitioners before you find a method that suits your comfort level.
